A Hospital Decisions Special Report Published By Sovereign Publications
OVERVIEW
During the last 10 years, musculoskeletal science and musculoskeletal conditions including: arthritis, back pain and damage to joints, muscles and tendons, have gained greater prominence on national research agendas and in several healthcare initiatives around the world. Musculoskeletal related conditions affect one in four adults and account for a quarter of the total global cost of illness. They are the most common cause of severe long-term pain and physical disability and represent by far the most prevalent cause of work-related illness in the UK affecting twice as many people as stress. In terms of the societal and economic effects, MSDs are responsible for 9.5 million lost working days, account for up to one third of all GP consultations and currently cost society approximately £7.4billion a year.
Within only 15 years, the hospitalisation burden of these conditions is expected to increase by more than 50%. Unless action is taken, the financial burden that musculoskeletal conditions exert upon healthcare systems worldwide will continue to increase.
As a result of this, Sovereign Medical is producing the European Musculoskeletal Science and Disease Review, which will discuss the etiology, prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and trauma. The report will evaluate current medical advances and opinion in musculoskeletal practice in Europe supported by independent, peer-reviewed articles written exclusively by key opinion leaders. Topics scheduled for discussion include: general orthopedics, implants, trauma, deformity correction, primary and revision joint replacement, hip resurfacing, shoulder and elbow surgery, foot and ankle reconstruction, cervical thoracic, and lumbar spine surgery, pediatric orthopaedics, cartilage restoration, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures, pain management and orthopaedic oncology.
The report will serve as a source of information for a targeted audience of clinicians and professional caregivers engaged in providing assessment, diagnosis, management and treatment regimens for musculoskeletal disorders and trauma. The aim of the report is to assist them in reducing the burden of these conditions upon patients, their families and health systems as a whole, whilst simultaneously improving patient outcomes.
